This totem pole was carved in honor of Marks’ grandfather, John Bremner Sr. The pole was raised on October 27, 2018 beside the house that John Bremner Sr. built in Yakutat, AK. The totem pole depicts a raven on top, John Bremner Sr’s clan, and John Bremner Sr. on the bottom, holding a thermos of coffee.
The pole was made possible through the James W. Ray Venture Project Award from the Frye Art Museum/Artist Trust Consortium. It was carved in Kingston, WA under the instruction of master Tsimshian artist David A. Boxley. The totem pole was then shipped to Yakutat where Marks put on the finishing touches. The totem pole raising was accompanied by a traditional ceremony and potlatch.
Marks is believed to be the first Tlingit woman to carve and raise a totem pole.
